The stunning Suffolk coast has always provided inspiration for writers and composers.  George Orwell wrote a number of books while resident in Southwold and Sir Benjamin Britten based his famous opera ‘Peter Grimes’ on the sounds and wild beauty of Aldeburgh beach. Our Coastal Quest tour passes through some delightful Suffolk countryside before exploring the coastal landscape between Southwold and Aldeburgh.

The route plan was spot-on, we got to Southwold on lovely quiet country lanes and had all afternoon to explore the town... a downhill ride and a ferry crossing by rowing boat was a great way to arive at our hotel!

Suffolk Coastal Quest : 3 nights

2 and 4 night options available

choose 23 or 34 mile route options available each day (approx).

Day 1 : Arriving at our base in Diss you can explore this quaint old market town or visit the famous Bressingham Gardens before departing for the coast with a gentle ride to an excellent small hotel in Harleston. Overnight stop-over in this charming country market town full of individually owned shops and traditional pubs.

Day 2 : Heading to Southwold through some of Suffolk’s most unspoilt countryside you have an option to visit St Peters Brewery and take part in a ‘tutored’ tasting session, or climb aboard some historical aircraft at the amazing Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum. Arriving in Southwold you will discover the many delights of this sophisticated seaside town before taking the ‘rowing boat’ ferry to your evening stop-over in Walberswick.

Day 3 : Turning South towards Aldeburgh you have the option of visiting the ‘ghost village’ of Dunwich.  Only a little now remains of this once large town which disappeared under the North Sea in the 18th century. Other options include a visit to the RSPB Nature Reserve at Minsmere or a short detour to Snape Maltings to view the Art Galleries and craft shops. More active cyclists may opt to have lunch in one of  Aldeburgh’s famous fish restaurants before heading inland later in the afternoon towards Framlingham and your overnight hotel.

Day 4 : Before heading back to Diss you can explore Framlingham’s amazing 12th Century Castle or sample the best local wines at Shawsgate Vineyard. Returning to Diss through the rolling countryside of North Suffolk, you have options to explore the amazing timber architecture of Wingfield College or perhaps another historic house near Eye or visit the nostalgic WWII memorial museum at Thorpe Abbotts.
